The Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale was built in 1995 as the last national pavilion in Giardini, Venice, and has served as a bridgehead to showcase Korean architecture and art to the world. It has become the stage for Korea's most renowned artists, architects and curators for the past 27 years.

This year, the Korean Pavilion has introduced what's called "Future School." The results of collaborating with experts from around the world on major challenges facing humanity, such as diasporas and the climate change, were presented in the Korean Pavilion as a classroom of Future School, and Future School Online, the virtual campus of the Future School. 140,000 visitors visited the Korean Pavilion for the past eight months since May, and the exhibition was successfully held despite the unprecedented situation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, in the midst of an unprecedented situation where the Venice Biennale was postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, curator Hae-Won Shin initiated joint activities among the curators of national pavilions from all around the world. Through this venture, we explored new ways to unleash the potential of the Venice Biennale against various challenges of COVID-19, and transformed the Venice Biennale into a stage of solidarity and cooperation beyond competition.

This achievement was possible through the efforts of all the 200 participating artists and creators, including curator Shin, the promotion team staff, and artists Ryul Song, Christian Schweitzer, and Hojun Song for their hard work for the Korean Pavilion exhibition for nearly three years since 2019. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the dedication everyone has shown.

Also, I would like to express my gratitude to various sponsors, including Woori Bank and Amorepacific, for helping to create such a fruitful exhibition. Arts Council Korea will continue to do its best to promote our architecture to the world through the Korean Pavilion of the Venice Biennale.

Thank you.

WHAT IS FUTURE SCHOOL?

Future School converts the Korean Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia into an international incubator for radical thinking–a meeting place to exchange and encounter ideas and projects that actively explore the notion of building a better future.

A global coalition of people, places, concepts and practices, Future School connects participants and programmes across borders and distance while fostering diverse modes of engagement. The ultimate aim is to forge new and multiple solidarities in the face of current and future challenges, including migration and the growth of the diaspora, the impact of climate change, and the increasing speed of social and technological change.

CAMPUS STRUCTURE

During the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Future School manifests within the Giardini in the form of a physical campus, hosting exhibitions, workshops, installations and conversations. A series of core commissions adds sound and movement, food and drink, and even a Code of Conduct for all participants. This Venice campus connects to other Future School campuses globally and to Future School Online, a new digital environment.

The aspiration to cultivate cross-disciplinary, interactive engagement of all kinds is reflected in the flexible use of the pavilion site–specifically the inclusion of informal domestic spaces that gently but resolutely dissolve the boundaries between learning and living. These include an open kitchen, a circular lounge, and a retreat room constructed entirely in hanji, a traditional, handmade Korean paper.

This is also the driving force behind Future School Online, which is both an archive and an active architecture that facilitates networking information and ongoing collaboration. At a time when travel and close contact are fraught with complication, Future School Online demonstrates how technology can support a globalised, collaborative approach to facing humanity's most pressing challenges.

PROGRAMMING AND CURRICULUM

Together with contributing architects, educators, artists, theorists and advocates, all visitors are invited to participate in acts of unlearning and relearning through various Future School events running for the duration of the Biennale. Each event is recorded and broadcast within the pavilion as part of an installation that grows and changes over time.

In both its physical and virtual manifestations, Future School offers more than 50 programmes exploring issues that range from cooling urban environments and the futurology of schools to innovative spatial interventions and borders as spaces of integration. This curriculum constitutes the core of Future School's first academic cycle, which launched in summer 2020 with several preliminary programmes held in Seoul. The design studios, lectures and seminars, discussion panels, exhibits, and other pedagogical interventions taking place during the Biennale Architettura 2021 will then culminate in a final 'semester' back in Seoul: a comprehensive exploration of the generated archive that will contribute to the development of yet more innovative programmes both in the Republic of Korea and beyond.

Why Is “Future School” about the Future?

The possibility of the future belongs to imagination, not reality. The imagination is the condition of actualization for any plan and practice. The “Future School” of the Korean Pavilion in the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia is the realization of the idea that links the imagination of the future to architectural materiality. The present is nothing else than the continuation of the past. We usually believe this continuation gravitates towards the future, but the future does not come through temporal progress. The future is the problem of the invention. In this sense, the future would finally come when the present radically breaks through the past.

When Hae-Won Shin, a curator of the project, firstly designed the Korean Pavilion as the generative becoming from the outset. The keyword of the Korean exhibition is not the reiteration of what we already always have but the production of what we do not have, i.e., something new, by the imagination of the future. The creation of the Future School is her primary purpose. The project was initiated before the pandemic unfolded and started with the abstractive concept of “an exhibition itself, which defers its realization” to raise the environmental and climate crisis issue. It would have been hard to explain this airy concept before the pandemic. However, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic has already justified the futuristic purpose of this exhibition. In other words, what the Korean Pavilion imagined came to true.

What the Korean Pavilion tried to do was the practice of possible international solidarity beyond the nation-states. Ms Shin and other participants believed that global problems such as climate change could be solved only through international collaboration. For this reason, the programme set forth an online platform integrating the exhibitions of each country, originally constructed as the symbolic monuments of the nation-states, into the logic of the virtual spatiality. However, the unprecedented pandemic forced us to accept this symbolic gesture as reality. This situation let us rediscover technology as a universal language. The exhibition of the Korean Pavilion does not only seem to predict the “future” but also to have already actualized.

Now, the motto of “architecture beyond architecture” has turned out a symbolic declaration, at the same time, an urgent task. Each singular group for this exhibition has fleshed out the international cooperation in a literal sense. The series of “generative” dialogues brought out many fruitful discussions on the meaning of “con-existence.” Why did such a practice have to be a dialogue? In fact, the conversations aimed at insisting on the imagination of architecture to come. The school did not intend to exchange (i.e., teaching) the established knowledge of any architecture but the “generative” multiplicity of the future. This conversation is like a preface for an unwritten book. This preface is experimental because of the unrealized idea of coming architecture -- the future of architecture that has already been generated as latent within the current assemblages.

In this manner, the “generative” dialogue is placed in a break between the present and the future. We must escape the gravity of the present temporality. Experience is the only way to get out of this gravity. The wholeness of experiences can never be quantified. The habitual belief is used for the quantification of the total experiences. Of course, this habit allows us to predict the outline of any architectural project. However, this habitual prediction limits our imagination to the present. Due to the justification of “realism,” our imagination is stuck to the gravity of the presence. This justification is the harness of the habitual perception, but also the condition of imagination. Without the material space of the Korean Pavilion in Venice, the virtual space of Future School is also impossible. The experimental practice as such is the construction of the link between actuality and virtuality.

Any escape from the present is the demand of the impossibility. What is impossible is what the present does not allow to be actualized. The crucial point here is that the impossibility is the prohibited possibility. The solution for the environmental and climate crisis and this pandemic situation is only possible by the banned imagination of the future. We have to request the impossible future breaking through the present problems. The meaning of the “generative” in this sense is a tactic to march beyond the present and into the future.

In fact, Shin’s curation for managing how to bring the abstract concepts of the “generative” into actuality was incredibly challenging. Rather than being completely divided, the realization of experimentality in the process of “creation” is the “future school.” It may have been an unfamiliar idea to hold the exhibition online at first, but the following situation proves that the evaluation of such an idea itself resulted from duration. This exhibition contains only the points of paradox. “Future School” best suits the real meaning of the school in that it raises a new ontological problem beyond simple epistemology. Schools are the representation of modernity. Jeremy Bentham’s idea of the Panopticon shows the essence of modern discipline, which identifies punishment with education. Bentham called Panopticon a “corrector” when he designed it as a prison. He also stressed that this principle could be applied to all modern architectures, including hospitals.

“Future School” is the product of efforts to discuss this problem of modernity. The purpose of the “generative” dialogues focused on this very issue and organized various encounters between activities and situations. “Future School” is an online education program and has successfully created a virtual space where teachers and learners do not exist separately. This model sets a sustainable programme even after the period of the biennale exhibition. This event will encourage you to do further experiments to shape similar models continuously, not just once. Indeed, this project let many groups not stay in the geographic locality and discuss the future together.

In the 1960s, the shared experimental spirit of the future gave birth to internationalism, and its influence transformed the form of the biennale. The phase of this pandemic also did not make the biennale remain in the state of the past. “Future School” was an intervention in the form of this biennale and an attempt that sowed the seeds of aspiration for a new era. When the noon sun is caught on the top of our heads, our shadows are the shortest. We are at noon, a moment at which our civilization is on the verge of transformation. As soon as this noon passes, the shadow will run in another direction. Physical space can be perceived completely differently depending on the problem of imagination. The same space does not exist. To create another space, we have to get into the “future” as the arrival of something new.

The process of the “generative” dialogues, in which current and future architects exchanged their ideas of the future, resides in the double meaning of “Future School.” The conversation, which was freely shared while abandoning the obsession of organizing and classifying diversity of experiences, provided us with many insights into the experimental nature of “creation.” The traces of these real-time events are stored in the form of data in a virtual space and will still stimulate someone’s imagination in the future. Of course, it is difficult to dare to say that this bulk of data itself is the “future.” Nevertheless, there are numerous moments of insight hidden in the data algorithm to produce a break for this current continuation. The future participants will find these hidden gems sooner or later.

In a sense, “Future School” has brought time to overcome the current crisis of “future” in a gloomy pandemic situation. Given that this “future” has not yet arrived, the 2021 “Future School” is a blueprint for architecture to be built in the future. The completion of the design does not automatically mean that its construction ends. The abstract blueprint will be realized through concrete architectural actions. I think “Future School” can create representations of new schools that go beyond the limits of the Panopticon. The school will be a pure architecture itself that can no longer be represented as a building. Architecture beyond architectural imagination is still unknown, but it is also an impossible possibility (or vice versa) that it will come to us someday.

17th International Architecture Exhibition- second meeting

Dear All,

on July 16th the traditional preliminary meeting to the 17th International Architecture Exhibition with the participating Countries took place. On that occasion we have expressed availability to further develop dialogues with the Commissioners and the Curators of the National Pavilions.

It is believed to comply with this requirement by convening a second meeting with the representatives of the Countries, at the level of Curator or alternatively Commissioner, who will be given the opportunity to present the contents of the National Participation for a maximum of 2 minutes in order first of all to illustrate the curatorial project of each participating Country as well as to deepen the organisational and technical aspects.

On the same occasion the developments of the Exhibition project of the Curator Hashim Sarkis will also be illustrated. The meeting has been called on October 23rd at 11:30am at Ca' Giustinian (San Marco, 1364 / A - 30124 Venice).
I will be grateful if you could confirm this invitation at your earliest convenience and let us know the name of the Commissioner or Curator or in case the person that will attend the meeting.

IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION -17.International Architecture Exhibition

Dear Commissioner,

Please find attached an official communication from the President Roberto Cicutto and the press release about the 17.International Architecture Exhibition.

Future School Office — 2021.10.29 05:30 AM

Dear Commissioner,

as a result of the recent precautionary measures on the subject of mobility taken by the governments of a growing number of countries around the world, which will have a chain effect on the movement of people and works in the coming weeks La Biennale has decided to extend the set-up period and to postpone the inauguration of the Exhibition on August 29th 2020. The preview days will therefore be on August 27th and 28n, and the Special Preview day on August 26th. The Exhibition will dose as planned on November 29th.

The coming months are crucial for the start of the preparation of a complex international exhibition such as the Biennale Architettura 2020, which involves architects and institutions of more than 60 countries from all the continents.

The current situation jeopardizes the realization of the Exhibition in its entirety for the pre-established opening date (May 23rd), potentially compromising its quality. A short-term postponement might not be effective, given the complexity of the organization, the number and importance of the parties involved.

In order to open a complete Exhibition, La Biennale, also having heard the curator Hashim Sarkis and in full respect of the difficulties of the participating countries and the invited architects, has decided therefore to postpone the inauguration to August 29th, bringing back this year's edition of Biennale Architettura on a quarterly basis, from late August to late November.

Thank you for your understanding and looking forward to seeing you in Venice.

Dear All,

We share information regarding the new dates of the Biennale. We plan to communicate new deadlines at the end of this month.
(For reference, we requested the title, text, schedule, etc. related to the program in February, and requested the primary materials for the digital exhibition by March 5.)

As we mentioned in the previous mail, we hope to profit this gained three months as an opportunity to enrich the 'Future School'. Our very initial idea to link and share different ideas and participants via will be worked more actively. The program contents (a draft document) that participants have shared so far is attached. Feel free to contact us if you want to share feedback or opinion on other program(s) or in case of any wish to discuss with other participant(s).

We plan to share the email addresses of the participants and hope that there will be an active dialogue with each other. 'Future School' will be held simultaneously in Venice (Giardini Korean Pavilion) and in Seoul for three months from August 29 to November 29. So programs that need to be adjusted according to the new schedule will be able to be coordinated by delivering the new schedule by the end of March.

Finally, at the end of April, we will organize meetings of participants in four cities: Seoul, London, Berlin, New York. We hope the Corona calms down so to be able to meet face to face.

Thank you.
Best regards,

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR FINAL DECISION / MAY, 2020

Future School Office — 2021.11.29 01:32 AM

Future School Office — 2021.11.29 01:30 AM

Dear Commissioners, Dear Curators,

I hope this message finds you well and safe in these challenging times. We are all living in this unprecedented moment of uncertainty and sharing the worries and the sorrows for such a huge crisis from mankind. Human, social, economic crisis.
Unfortunately, the current situation with the many objective difficulties affecting all aspects of our lives does not allow to move forward with the organization of such a complex and large worldwide Exhibition as the Biennale Architettura.

As President Roberto Cicutto just illustrated during the third meeting with the countries participating in the exhibition the inevitable decision was made to open the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in 2021. It will have the duration of 6 months and will be held from May 22nd to November 21st 2021, while the Biennale Arte will be postponed to 2022, from April 23rd to November 27th (please see Press Release in attachment).

We are well aware of all the work that has been done so far, of all the efforts that have been made in the past months for the preparation and the organization of your National Participation. On the other side, we believe that your participation can find its best fulfillment and well deserved appreciation as integral part of the wider context of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition and as enrichment of the research of How will we live together?, a theme and subject that after these dramatic times will certainly play an even more crucial role.

Future School Office — 2021.11.29 01:34 AM

La Biennale di Venezia /
Biennale Architettura will open in 2021
It will last 6 months and will be held from May 22nd to November 21st
Biennale Arte will open in 2022, from April 23rd to November 27th

La Biennale di Venezia announces that the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – How will we live together? – curated by Hashim Sarkis, which was to take place in Venice from August 29th through November 29th 2020, has been postponed to 2021, to be held Saturday May 22nd to Sunday November 21st.

Consequently, the 59th International Art Exhibition, curated by Cecilia Alemani, which was to take place in 2021, has in turn been postponed to 2022. It will last 7 months and will be held from Saturday April 23rd to Sunday November 27th.

The decision to postpone the Biennale Architettura to May 2021 is an acknowledgment that it is impossible to move forward - within the set time limits – in the realization of such a complex and worldwide exhibition, due to the persistence of a series of objective difficulties caused by the effects by the health emergency underway.

The current situation, up to now, has definitely prejudiced the realization of the exhibition in its entirety, jeopardizing the realization, transport and presence of the works and consequently the quality of the Exhibition itself. Therefore, after consulting with the Curator Hashim Sarkis and in consideration of the problems, the invited architects, participating countries, institutions, collateral events are facing, thanking all of them for their efforts so far, La Biennale has decided to postpone the opening date of the Biennale Architettura to the year 2021, extending its duration back to the customary six months, from May 22nd to November 21st.

All other events remain confirmed: the 77th Venice International Film Festival directed by Alberto Barbera from September 2nd to 12th; the 48th International Theatre Festival directed by Antonio Latella from September 14th to 24th; the 64th International Festival of Contemporary Music directed by Ivan Fedele, from September 25th to October 4th; the 14th International Festival of Contemporary Dance directed by Marie Chouinard from October 13th to 25th.

“The last few days – declared President Roberto Cicutto - have clarified the real state of the situation we are all facing. With the utmost respect for the work done by all of us, the investments made by the participants, and considering the difficulties that all countries, institutions, universities, architectural studios have met together with the uncertainty of the shipments, personal travel restraints and Covid-19 protective measures that are being and were be adopted, we have decided to listen to those, the majority, who requested that the Biennale di Architettura be postponed. I have received many messages asking for a postponement to 2021. We now plan to open the 17th Biennale Architettura in May 2021 and allow it a longer life until November, as it was before the pandemic. Nevertheless Architecture will be in Venice this Fall organizing several events keeping at the center of the stage the question, more relevant than ever, of “How will we live together?”.”

“I am deeply moved by the perseverance of all the participants during the last three months – stated Curator Hashim Sarkis. I hope that the new opening date will allow them first to catch their breath, and then to complete their work with the time and vigor it truly deserves. We did not plan it this way. Neither the question I asked “How will we live together?” nor the wealth of ways in response to it, were meant to address the crisis they are living, but here we are. We are in some ways fortunate because we are well equipped to absorb the immediate and longer-term implications of the crisis into the 17th Biennale. The theme does also provide us with the possibility to respond to the pandemic in its immediacy. This is why we will return to Venice in the coming months for a series of activities devoted to the Architecture.”

FSSS 2020, Transborder Lab

Dear all,

For those of you who are not in Seoul, please understand this request. We would need your self-interview video so that we can edit and upload it for promotion.

I am sending you an unedited interview video for your reference. As you can see, the interview can be very short.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPTTIyi_u9g&feature=youtu.be

Here are the questions;

  1. brief introduction of who you are.
    (i.e. I am an assistant professor at Hongik University and my research focuses on blablabla.)
  2. what you think about the theme "transborder" or "border" in general.
  3. what you have done recently related to the theme (project wise, research wise, or others)
  4. what you expect to share with students during the FSSS. or what you expect from students

And here are the tips;

  1. if possible, please record the audio file separately.
    we have been using iphone audio recorder and it is much better than audio quality in video recording. (less echo as well) So if you could have multiple devices, please have one only for audio recording.
  2. For that purpose, please clap your hands in the beginning so that we can sync the audio and video easily.
  3. Please put your camera a bit lower that your eye levels. (no selfie angle!)
  4. I found it better when the interviewee does not stare at the camera. So please sit a bit angled.
  5. tripod is required to make the camera stable and parallel to ground.

Hello All,

As you may know already, the opening of the Venice Biennale has been postponed to late August. You may have wondered about our FSSS schedule change, however, after discussion with the director Hyewon, we decided to stick to the original plan.

So there won't be any schedule change in FSSS.
Please check the draft pdf again, and let us know if you had any schedule conflict that we have to rearrange.
But there are two minor changes;

  • we have to look for a new place to hold FSSS. Once set, we will announce it to you.
  • round table discussion on FSSS at Venice will also be postponed to late August.
    Lastly, please share your session title with us if you haven't yet.

Thank you in advance,
Warm regards,

Dear Future School Participants,

In this uncertain time, I wanted to reach out once more and confirm that Future School is moving forward as planned.

We are currently operating in full faith that we will be able to come together in Venice this August. At the same time, social distancing restrictions do continue to be in effect here in Seoul despite our relative successes in managing COVID-19, so we are planning for alternative scenarios as well.

Even if the Venice Biennale is further delayed, Future School will happen regardless — with what we hope will be your full participation.

Beginning with the launch of our Seoul-based Summer Studio this June, the Future School online platform will be up and running for all of us to plug into virtually for scheduled workshops and events. We also have a physical space here in Seoul to serve as a hub for remote participation and host in-person gatherings, local conditions permitting.

Since “innovation” has been one of the three major themes of Future School from its very conception, I trust that our burgeoning community is not only up for this pivot, but may even find in it some cause for renewed energy and focus.

We will contact you individually over this coming week to confirm your scheduling and format and arrange a meeting to discuss further details. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or ideas you may have, and meanwhile, please do take care of yourselves and one another.

(Neil Smith),

(There is no such thing as a natural disaster)

*Umwelt: 독일어 'Um(둘러싸인/주변around)'과 'welt(세계/환경world/sphere)'의 합성어

*Synanthrope: syn(~와 함께)과 anthropos(인류)의 합성어.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the biennale was postponed by one year, and the artworks and materials sent to the Korean Pavilion in Venice in the spring of 2020 were kept intact.

Across the closed border, the Future School Office and the installation team had to decide whether to go to Venice in early 2021 to proceed with the installation or to proceed with all installations remotely (via Zoom).

On December 10, 2020, a request for emergency use approval of the Pfizer vaccine was received in the United States.

Invitation from the Korean Pavilion, 21 April 2020

Future School Office — 2021.11.30 12:33 AM

Dear Fellow Curators,

In this challenging moment, I would like to extend an invitation. On May 23rd, the original opening day of the Biennale, "Future School" (the Korean Pavilion) will be holding a live gathering here in Seoul. On this occasion, we hope you can join us remotely for a conversation between available national curators.

The intention at this stage is simply to initiate an exchange of ideas between colleagues, taking a joint step toward furthering what matters most: global solidarity. After processing the content of this discussion, we can move forward by reaching out to the event organisers in Venice with a collaborative proposal.

So far, national curators Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli (the Russian Pavilion) and Alexander Furunes (the Philippines Pavilion) have expressed their interest in this undertaking, and I hope you will be able to join us as well.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Hae-Won Shin
Curator, The Korean Pavilion

Venice Biennale 2021 National Pavilion Curators Collective
Architects across the globe launch historic collaborative initiative

www.labiennale.org

For the first time in the Venice Architecture Biennale’s 40-year history, national pavilion curators around the globe are organizing in a spirit of togetherness and solidarity. The ongoing online dialogue, initiated May 23, 2020 by the Republic of Korea, has been joined by over 30 countries and the Biennale’s chief curator, Hashim Sarkis. The shared goal is to investigate new avenues for fulfilling the Biennale’s potential as a platform for synergistic, expansive, and accessible collaboration more suited to the challenges we all face in the age of COVID-19 and beyond. As the first manifestation of this undertaking, the curators present the following:

Joint Statement by the National Curators of 33 Participating Countries of the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale

The 17th Biennale Architettura’s central question of “How will we live together?” takes on new significance as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaks unforeseen and unimaginable disruption across the globe. With lives and livelihoods at stake, we must re-evaluate how we think about our profession, our modes of collaboration and our built environment. The months ahead until the Biennale’s new 2021 opening present a unique opportunity for participating nations to form community, share information, and pursue possible joint efforts.

We, a growing group of national curators, have come together for the first time to initiate open dialogue. Moving forward, we commit to establishing a platform to share our exhibition content and investigate valuable correlations. We intend for this exchange to result in concrete collaborations and joint projects between nations which underline the communal goals and concerns of our shared profession. Our ultimate objective is the consolidation of this independent platform, securing a long-term open channel for continued exchange between curators and commissioners not just for the 2021 Biennale but for all future Venice Biennales.

We see this initiative as a step toward building a better Venice Architecture Biennale, emphasizing the role of discovery, understanding, and mutual exchange within the existing structure of an international contest that awards excellence. We seek to ignite this global event’s potential to become an active assembly, where the whole is more than the factual sum of its parts.

As we publish this statement on August 29th 2020, the Biennale’s first postponed opening date, we do not yet know exactly how these efforts will materialize. We have no doubt, however, that this is a necessary step forward for our profession in this new age.

Venice Architecture Biennale 2021 National Pavilion Curators Collective
A new template for international cultural collaboration
Curators Collective opening: May 23, 2pm

curatorscollective.org

The Venice Biennale is one of the world’s most influential cultural events. Like many other such events, the 2021 Architecture Biennale has faced postponement and the inevitability of decreased visitor numbers due to travel bans and gathering restrictions. The repeated closure of museums, exhibitions, and events worldwide has exacted a heavy toll on the culture sector over the past year, making it clear that this moment in history demands new ways of thinking and working.

On May 23, 2020, curators from across the globe gathered at the instigation of Hae-Won Shin, the curator of the Korean Pavilion, and confirmed their shared interest in turning the Biennale’s postponement into an opportunity to work together. Since then, the Curators Collective (CC) has grown into a coalition of architects that currently includes the curators of 48 National Pavilions participating in the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

The CC has developed a layer of independent programming and collaborative projects to run during the Architecture Biennale. This will begin with an online ”opening” on May 23, 2021 for all the CC's participating National Pavilions. The CC will gather physically in Venice for a midissage event on August 28, 2021 and will organise a Pavilion Festival in October, with a guided passeggiata around the pavilions in the Giardini, Arsenale, and across Venice. Other events will include lectures, talks and moments of collaborative action that will unfold during the course of the Biennale.

With official recognition by the Biennale and inclusion in the Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts (ASAC), the Biennale Foundation’s archival programme, the CC is also looking beyond the 17th Architecture Biennale to explore how this collective, collaborative approach can inform the future of the National Pavilions.

“How will we live together?” This question, set by the lead curator and director, Hashim Sarkis, lies at the heart of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. Understood as one possible answer, the Curators Collective aims to demonstrate how effective curators can be in engaging both people and issues beyond the conventions of existing institutions and systems that might otherwise struggle to respond to the rapidly changing world around us.

Transnational midissage
August 27–29, 2021
Opening ceremony: August 27, 11am–12:45pm

curatorscollective.org

From August 27–29, the Curators Collective will host a series of public events to mark the midterm of the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, one of the most important cultural events this year. Taking place ahead of the postponed awards ceremony for the 17th International Venice Architecture Biennale and bringing together collaborating national pavilions in the Giardini, Arsenale, and throughout Venice, the Midissage programme is part of the Curators Collective’s ongoing effort to fulfil the Biennale’s potential as a platform for collaboration, solidarity, and accessibility.

Ranging from panel discussions to exhibition presentations to book launches and walking tours, these events will open space for collective reflection on the ways in which curators of national pavilions have responded to the core question of the 2021 Architecture Biennale, “How will we live together?”

The Midissage events will be open to all visitors of the 2021 Venice Biennale. Selected events will also be streamed online for those who cannot attend the exhibition in person.

A preliminary programme can be found below. Further details, including the full programme and schedule, will be announced closer to the date in the final weeks of August and will be made accessible via the Curators Collective website, the Biennale website, and the webpages of individual pavilions.

The Curators Collective (CC) is a coalition of National Pavilion Curators participating in the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale. Its goal is to investigate new avenues for synergistic and accessible collaboration more suited to the challenges we all face in the age of COVID-19 and beyond and open up a space for engagement between curators and commissioners of participating countries.

Through transnationally programmed events hosted by the participating pavilions and curators, the Midissage will offer audiences—both onsite and online—the opportunity to take part in this unique forum of global exchange. It will exercise and enact the CC’s intention to forge new collaborative possibilities, to better address the great challenges we face today in inhabiting our built environments.

CC Midissage – Preliminary Programme

The students of the three winning benches will be invited over Zoom to participate in a celebratory gathering.

Evolving Manifesto launch
From 11:30am, the opening event will focus on the launch of the CC’s Evolving Manifesto. This launch will take the form of the physical/virtual activity, where drafts of the CC manifesto will be presented, and visitors/viewers will be encouraged to respond, question and engage with these evolving claims. By presenting the manifesto as a liquid space for co-produced, evolving guidelines, the manifesto will respond to our contemporary moment’s urgent need for active questioning, diversity and collaboration, rather than universalising claims and reductive answers.

The Fiume Fantastika book is the result of research into the phenomenon of the city of Rijeka, its history, and its potential futures. Located at the crossroads of cultures, nations, economic interests, and ideologies, Rijeka has experienced dramatic ups and downs from the beginning of the 18th century until today, which in turn seriously affected its urban physiognomy. Squeezed between the sea and the mountains, the urban culture of Rijeka is marked by simultaneous conflicts and cooperation between the industrial infrastructure complex and the public domain. The book outlines key episodes of its fantastic history in which numerous dilemmas of global modern society are sharpened to the extreme. Guest Speakers will include Idis Turato, Ida Križaj Leko, Vedran Mimica, Maroje Mrduljaš, Deyan Sudjic and Alessandro Rocca, with moderation by the Luka Skansi.

As the 2021 edition of Venice Biennale draws to a close, the Curators Collective (CC) is looking to the future.

Established with the intention of turning the pandemic-induced postponement of the 17th Architecture Biennale into an opportunity for positive change, the CC is a unique network formed of more than 50 National Pavilion curators and collaborators. Emerging from the one-year postponement of the Biennale, this is the first time in the history of the Venice Biennale that an international coalition of architects, researchers, writers and artists have come together in this way. The focus of the CC was to provide support, solidarity and opportunities for collaboration while interrogating and discovering potential answers to the core question of the Biennale: “How can we live together?”

“Living together” as a collective separated by the restrictions of the COVID pandemic, the CC has manifested new possibilities that would not be feasible without the shared experiences, support, thought and action of the collective body. In its processes, the CC has demonstrated one possible model for transnational collaboration based on an open, non-hierarchical, networked structure. The results have far exceeded anything its initial participants could have expected.

The outcomes include a layer of live, offline and online programming, enriching the Biennale with talks, performances and publications that have uncovered commonalities, inspired new lines of inquiry and opened up new avenues for cooperation. With many individuals unable to attend the official opening in May, the CC came together to curate and stage a Midissage event in August, coordinating a wide range of cross-pavilion events, with rich debates and discussions as well as a series of walks connecting the pavilions of the Arsenale and Giardini to those around the city.

A design competition organised by the CC has seen the creation of new benches, formed out of leftover materials from the pavilions and made by pavilion team members, creating new types of public connection within the Biennale venues. The CC has also explored the power of manifesto-making, connecting and interrogating the past, present and future roles of the Biennale and of architecture itself. All of these and more are collected on a dedicated CC website, generating a rich archive.

Energised by the synergies created before, during and after the gap year, the collective wants to extend this experience and continue to explore new ways of working cooperatively through international projects, exhibitions, conferences and meetings. Today, the CC extends an open invitation to the next curators of the 18th Architecture Biennale, offering a platform, a resource and a support system for architecture curators who are confronting the major challenges presented by our rapidly changing world.

Based on your answers, you can enter Italy. Read carefully the information provided below.

In accordance with Prime Ministerial Decree of March 2, 2021 and Order of October 22, 2021 of the Minister of Health, people who have stayed in or transited Countries in List D in the 14 days prior to entering Italy must:

  1. Fill out a digital Passenger Locator Form (only in case of lack of necessary tools to fill out the dPLF, you can use a paper-based self-declaration) and present it to the carrier or any other authorised person, either printed or on one's mobile device.
  2. Present to the carrier, or any other authorised person, a certificate of vaccination stating that the cycle of vaccination has been completed with an EMA-athorised vaccine or EU Green Pass proving the same;
  3. Take a molecular or antigenic test, carried out by means of a swab and with negative result, in the 72 hours before they arrive.

In case of lack of the certification under point 2, travellers may still enter Italy but they must:

  • Undergo a molecular or antigenic test, carried out by means of a swab and with negative result, in the 72 hours prior to entering Italy;
  • self-isolate for five (5) days, activating local health surveillance procedures by informing Local Health Authorities.
  • get tested again, upon completing the prescribed self-isolation.

Travellers coming from Canada, Japan or the United States may enter/return to Italy with a certificate of vaccination or a certificate of recovery in the form of a Digital Covid Certificate, or equivalent certificate, issued by local Health Authorities. They must take also a molecular or antigenic test in the 72 hours prior to entering Italy, carried out by means of a swab, and with negative result. Otherwise, travellers from Canada, Japan or the United States may still enter Italy following general provisions for Countries in List D, as described above (test, self-isolation and subsequent test).

The provisions described above are in force until December 15, 2021.

Border Officers in Italy may always request that you fill out a paper-based self-statement upon arrival.

Further restrictions to movements may be adopted at national and/or regional level depending on the risk assessment carried out on a regular basis by the Ministry of Health. You can find useful information on local restrictions on the website of the Ministry of Health, by clicking: Containment Measures in Italy.

ENTRY OF MINORS

In addition to cases of exemption already mentioned in the relevant paragraph:

  1. Molecular or antigenic test
  • Children from 0 to 5 years of age do not have to undergo a molecular or antigenic test.
  • From 6 up to 17 years of age: the test is mandatory, if requested according to the relevant rules depending on the history of travel in the 14 days prior to entering Italy.
  1. Self-isolation
  • From 0 to 5 years of age, minors are always exempt from the requirement of self-isolation if they are accompanied by a parent who is also exempt from such requirement because of the possession of a certificate of vaccination (or a certificate of recovery, if applicable based on the history of travel in the previous 14 days).
  • From 6 to 17 years of age, at the same conditions named above, they are also exempt from the requirement of self-isolation. Nonetheless, they must undergo a molecular or antigenic test to enter Italy, depending on their history of travel. If they do not take the test when required as per Italian regulations, they will be subject to self-isolation, regardless of the vaccination or recovery status of their accompanying parent.

EXEMPTIONS

As per Order of October 22, 2021, the following categories of travellers may be fully or partially exempt from the requirements of an EU Digital Covid Certificate, self-isolation and subsequent test.

I. FULL EXEMPTION from the requirements of pre-departure testing/Certificate, self-isolation and subsequent testing

Provided that they do not show any symptoms compatible with Covid-19, the following travellers are exempt from the requirements under title I, but they are still required to fill out a Passenger Locator Form (dPLF).

  1. Crew and travel personnel/hauliers;
  2. People travelling to/from Countries in List A;
  3. Cross-border workers;
  4. Any person entering Italy for a period not exceeding 120 hours due to proven needs of work, health or absolute urgency, with the obligation, on expiry of that period, to leave the national territory immediately or, failing that, to begin the period of surveillance and fiduciary isolation;
  5. Any person transiting, by private means, through Italian territory for a period not exceeding 36 hours, with the obligation, at the end of that period, to leave the national territory immediately or, failing that, to begin the period of surveillance and trustee isolation in accordance with paragraphs 1 to 5 of Prime Ministerial Decree of March 2, 2021;
  6. Any person returning to Italy after a stay abroad of less than 48 hours and at a distance of less than 60 km from their home/domicile/residence in Italy, provided that they travel by private means of transportation.
  7. Any person remaining in Italy for less than 48 hours, in areas of the national territory no further than 60 km from their home/residence/domicile abroad, provided that they travel by private means of transportation.
  8. Pupils and students to attend a course of study in a country other than their country of residence, dwelling or abode, to which they return every day or at least once a week.

Only travellers listed under points 6 and 7 are not required to fill out a dPLF either.

II. PARTIAL EXEMPTION from the requirements of self-isolation and subsequent testing

Provided that they do not show any symptoms compatible with Covid-19, the following travellers are exempt from the requirements under title II, but they are still required to fill out a Passenger Locator Form and to take a pre-departure test in the 48 or 72 hours before entering Italy, or present a Covid certificate, depending on their travel history.

  1. Personnel of companies and institutions with registered or secondary offices in Italy when travelling abroad for proven work requirements not exceeding 120 hours.
  2. Officials and other servants, however defined, of the European Union or international organisations, diplomatic agents, administrative and technical staff of diplomatic missions, consular officials and employees, personnel of the Security Information System of the Republic and fire brigade workers, military and police staff in the performance of their duties.
  3. Health personnel entering Italy for the exercise of professional health qualifications, including the temporary exercise referred to in Article 13 of Decree-Law no. 18 of 17 March 2020.
  4. Citizens or residents of Countries in List A, B, C or D, travelling for proven work reasons for more than 120 hours.
  5. Passengers of “Covid-tested” flights, as defined by the Minister of Health with Order of November 23 2020. Please note that travellers are only eligible for a Covid-tested flight if they have not stayed in or transited through a List-E country or a country subject to more restrictive measures in the previous 14 days. For further information on “Covid-tested” flights, kindly contact your airline.
  6. Travellers entering Italy for work reasons regulated by special security protocols, approved by the relevant health authority;
  7. Travellers entering Italy for non-deferrable reasons, authorized by the Italian Ministry of Health, with a certificate of a molecular or antigenic test carried out by means of a swab in the 48 hours before entering Italy, with negative result. Click here for further information.
  8. Athletes, commissioners, referees, foreign press and alike, irrespective of their travel history, entering Italy to take part in sporting events of national interest, as defined by Order of October 22, 2021.

A Few Examples

An Italian national has to undergo surgery in Italy, for an overall stay of 3 days. The Italian national is resident in Tunisia and travels from there. In this case, the person is not required to take a test or stay in self-isolation, but is still required to fill out a digital Passenger Locator Form. After 3 days, and in any case after 120 hours, he/she must leave national territory or self-isolate.

A Mexican national residing in the United States and travelling from the latter has to enter Italy for an important business meeting, for an overall stay of 4 days. The Mexican national is not required to self-isolate or to take a molecular test but he/she must fill out a digital Passenger Locator form. After 4 days or after a maximum of 120 hours, he/she must leave national territory or self-isolate.

An Australian national currently residing in South Africa seeks entry into Italy as he/she has been hired by a local company. The Australian national must take a molecular or antigenic test 72 hours before entering Italy and fill out a digital Passenger Locator Form, but he/she is not required to self-isolate once in Italy, regardless of the duration of his/her stay in Italy for work-related reasons.

Any employee (regardless of their nationality) of a company registered in Italy has to travel to Ethiopia in order to oversee a purchase for a client, for no longer than 5 days. Upon his/her return, he/she is required to take a molecular or antigenic test carried out in the 72 hours prior to entering Italy and fill out a digital Passenger Locator Form.

OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION

Since January 2020, the World has been witnessing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. All travellers intending to go abroad should be aware that any travel, during this time, may pose a health risk, regardless of their destination or purpose of the trip. If you are required to undergo a COVID-19 test to enter/return to Italy, you must take into consideration that you could test positive. Should that be the case, you are not allowed to travel by commercial means and you are subject to local quarantine procedures and containment measures. These procedures apply also to those who are identified as “contacts” by local health authorities, depending on local rules and regulations. Travellers who test positive to Covid-19 and their contacts, as defined by local authorities, must follow local rules on quarantine and movement restrictions. We recommend that any traveller plan their trip thoroughly, taking into account the chance of having to extend their stay overseas, as well as the need for a comprehensive health insurance that can cover risks connected to COVID-19.

During your stay in Italy, even if you fall into one of the categories above, should any flu-like symptoms compatible with COVID-19 arise, you must report it immediately to the local Health Authority, by calling dedicated local numbers. While waiting for further Health Authority decisions, you must put yourself in self-isolation.

Here you can find useful information and contact numbers provided by the Italian Ministry of Health.

Before embarking on a trip to Italy, make sure that your Region of destination has no further measures in place. Here you can find their websites. Useful contacts are available here.

For health related queries, kindly contact local Health Authorities in your region.

For queries related to borders and border crossing, kindly contact Border Police of the designated point of entry/exit or local “Prefettura”.

The result of the questionnaire does not guarantee entry into the Country, which is always subject to the assessment of Italian Border Officers (Ministry of Interior). The questionnaire has no legal value.

USE OF GREEN PASS IN ITALY. WHEN AND WHERE:

As of August 6, 2021, Italian Authorities have established the mandatory requirement of a “Green Pass” or EU Digital Covid Certificate or equivalent certificate recognized by the Italian Authorities, for any person aged 12 and above, in Italy, wishing to:

  • access any indoor dining services;
  • take part in public events, including cinemas, theatres and sporting events;
  • visit museums and other cultural institutions;
  • attend swimming pools, gyms, Spas, wellness and thermal centres, theme and amusement parks, cultural and leisure centres, casinos, gaming halls;
  • attend exhibitions, trade fairs, conferences and congresses.

As of September 1, a “Green Pass” or EU Digital Covid Certificate, or equivalent* certificate recognized by the Italian Authorities is compulsory also to board:

  • airplanes;
  • ships and ferries for inter-regional transportation (not including ferry connections in the Strait of Messina);
  • High speed trains (such as Intercity or Frecce);
  • Buses for inter-regional transportation;
  • Chartered buses with driver.

A certificate or a green pass to be used for the aforesaid purposes must show proof of either having received one dose of vaccine; or of a negative result of a molecular or antigenic test carried out in the previous 48 hours; or of having recovered from Covid-19 in the previous 6 months. Currently, according to the Italian Ministry of Health, equivalent certificates for national purposes are those issued by Health Authorities in certain Extra EU Countries, if they respond to all requirements set forth by the Italian Ministry of Health.

Furthermore, as of September 23, 2021, the Italian Ministry of Health recognized the following as equivalent to the vaccines authorised in Italy:

  • Vaccines recognised by the EMA;
  • Covidshield (Serum Institute of India), licensed by AstraZeneca;
  • R-CoVI (R-Pharm) licensed by AstraZeneca;
  • Covid-19 vaccine-recombinant (Fiocruz) licensed by AstraZeneca.

Not all equivalent certificates are sufficient to enter Italy without further requirements. For country-specific information on how to enter Italy from abroad, kindly follow the information provided in the paragraphs above as the "Green Pass in Italy" rules apply only to people who are already in Italy. Kindly note that a certificate proving that you have received the first dose of a two-dose vaccine (meaning that you are waiting for the second dose) or a certificate proving that you have been vaccinated with one of the vaccines mentioned under point 1 – 4 will not be enough to enter Italy from abroad.

Future School Office — 2021.12.1 02:59 AM

Hello and welcome. My name is Park Jong-gwan, Chairman of Arts Council Korea.

The Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale was established in the Venice Giardini in 1995, and has served as a bridgehead to spearhead the promotion of Korean art to the world. For the past 27 years, it has served as a stage for prominent Korean artists, architects, and curators to realize their dreams. As the last national pavilion built in the main venue of the Venice Biennale, it received the special prize for three consecutive years upon its opening and finally received the Golden Lion award in 2014.

This year, the Korean Pavilion is introducing what's called "Future School." The works of experts and architects on major challenges facing mankind today, such as diasporas and climate change, will be presented at both the Korean Pavilion and Future School Online.

Future School Online offers more than 50 diverse programs such as designing a system to solve the urban heat island phenomena in modern cities and exploring alternative education for the future as well as Transborder Lab that crosses the boundaries of abstraction, psychology and physics, all of which is available online without spatial restrictions.

As we all know, this year's Venice Biennale has had its ups and downs, with last year's event being postponed a year. It is worth mentioning that Curator Hae-Won Shin took the initiative to conduct joint activities with the Biennale's curators in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The joint activities with curators from 49 countries around the world explored new ways to unleash the potential of the Venice Biennale in the face of post-pandemic challenges.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to curator Shin, who worked hard for the Korean Pavilion exhibition for two years since 2019, and to all the 200 participating artists, including Ryul Song, Christian Schweitzer, and Hojun Song.
Above all, I would like to thank the sponsors for helping us create a fruitful exhibition. I would like to express my deep gratitude to several sponsors, including Woori Bank, the first Korean bank to achieve triple crown of The Banker, and AmorePacific, which is transforming the world with beauty.

I would also like to applaud the staff who put in unseen hard work for Future School of the Korean Pavilion.

Thank you.

On behalf of the curatorial team, I sincerely welcome you all to Future School the Korean Pavilion La Biennale Venezia – all citizens of this earth, refugees and migrants, those affected by the climate crisis, the next generation burdened by the current competitive school system and all who dream of a better life and positive change in the future.

A new day has come.

Thank you to all of the participants of Future School, who have spent so much time preparing for the Venice Biennale and for this brilliant day. You have persevered through your own responsibilities and entered into a place of great possibilities in these difficult times. We hope your vision of the works will be fulfilled and recognized by the wider world.

Your continual, boundless creativity, thoughtful creations and innovative processes offer a beacon of hope.
Today—this new day—is only possible thanks to your collective efforts. We wish that the whole world will listen and shine brightly as we hold this event, asking for the blessings of everyone who has worked hard and everyone who has helped us.

I hope that the audience will enjoy the programmes and exhibitions that the people who have played a part in the making of Future School have created with all their heart and soul.

Lastly, I hope we can offer some comfort to those who are suffering from Covid-19. We can all be small seeds in saving lives by being part of the shift towards a better future for all.

In this spirit, we gather and sing together with joy. I hope this will be a time to dream of a fair world, a precious time to love and live together, and a time for new hope.

We are excited to announce the closing performance of the Korean Pavilion Future School. The performance, "Very Very Good" by Eun-Me Ahn and Hyekyoung Kim will be held on Saturday 13 November Noon (12:00 CET / 20:00 KST) at the Korean Pavilion, La Biennale di Venezia. Eun-Me Ahn gave her opening performance for the Korean Pavilion last May, visualizing & celebrating opening a new chapter of the Future School exhibition. An upcoming performance will be closing the chapter, after a six month journey under the Pandemic, with all the FS participants, visitors, and everyone who is part of the Korean Pavilion.

Congrats to all who made this together. Let's celebrate the end of journey together.

(Very Very Good)

The Korean Pavilion Future School exhibition closed with a breaking record of visitors' numbers.
What a remarkable result to see how the audience is willing to be in presence under the global epidemic.
Thanks so much for visiting the Korean Pavilion and the Future School Online during the past six months.
Hope it is not an end but a new beginning on another creative journey to the future.

The Korean Pavilion / Go Green

Future School Office — 2021.12.7 04:48 AM

The Korean Pavilion 'Go Green' program is for sharing and extending usability of tools, items and shelves that had been used in the pavilion during the 6 month exhibition with the locals who need those
for running their spaces and programs with good wills.

This was one of the core value and will of the Korean Pavilion Future School exhibition for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition to minimize the greenhouse gas emissions from commercial flights and the waste specifically produced by the deinstallation after the biennale.

Future School Office — 2021.12.7 05:11 AM

THE KOREAN PAVILION DOCUMENTATION

Overview

The Future School Documentation is a series of data set or an archive of the two years and a half journey of the Future School, from 2019 to 2021. The documentation shares and shows how the Future School exhibition in the Korean Pavilion Venice had developed and how it concludes it's final moment. This archive is also meant to show how crucial it had been to generate diverse interactions and collaborations with the Future School participants, the Venice docent team, and creative people from various expertise and backgrounds to realize the project.

The Future School Documentation will complete its journey by closing the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in late November.
