Preface

This book is an archiving book that records the programs of "Venice Biennale Future School Summer Studio: Transborder Lab" in the summer of 2020. And it contains the brief introductions and Q&A sessions of workshops and lectures that were conducted within the program, and the work and discussions of students. Archiving work was carried out under voluntary by some students who participated in the Future School program and could be completed with the help of other participants and sharers of the Transborder Lab and the organizers of the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. By preface of the book, we express our great gratitude to all those who have helped us. Future School expressed the theme based studio, instead of relying on the professor’s unique pedagogy and the relationship of the participants and sharers, rather than the relationship between the professor and the student. And ultimately aimed to make the platform to form and communicate each other's discourse. After the first summer semester of Future School is over, the process of book making has allowed the Archiving
Team to look back on the scenes in which the organizers' intentions are realized, which has allowed us to agree a little more with the values of Future School. On the one hand, however, it is also true that the imperfections of institutional education and its solidity were felt simultaneously in the process. The method of alternative education is apt to idealize itself, and its practice is apt to b e lightly forgotten in
the name of the experiment. Besides, valuable discourse is extended infinitely, but a discourse that remains only with dialogue is often remembered as one impression, leaving no substance. In the introduction of Future School, they talked about a paradigm shift beyond the institutional sphere of architectural education. However, some participants, who are continuing their studies within institutional education, saw a paradigm shift that cannot be achieved with mere impressions. So, we felt the need to leave a record of the discourse that occurred
at future schools, so as not to disappear. Along with to record the past four weeks of experience, the "Future School Archiving Project" aims to recognize
the ‘Future School’ as a project that continues to experiment, discuss and revise, and let people such as future or past participants and organizers look back at them from their own perspectives. Through this, we would like to look back more objectively on what differences were made in the planning and implementation of Future Schools and what was achieved or not. We do perceive this process as a significant attempt in terms of viewing future schools as a lab. The Future School Archiving Team hopes this archiving book will be read by future an d past participants, as well as organizers and the public interested in architecture, education, and "borders." Also, we hope that the book will be taken as a point during the ongoing experimental process of future schools and will have a positive effect o n the process in the future.

Questioning the nature and function of borders in architecture

Overview

A border, by definition, is a line separating two political or geographical areas, implying many different tensions. Borders, however, can also be treated as areas in their own right, producing distinct environments that exist between the divided geopolitical actors. Transborder Lab, the chosen theme of the Future School Summer Studio in 2020, focused on the theory and praxis of such border conditions. Following the Summer Studio, this theme is further developed through, but not limited to, a series of dialogues between architects, artists and scholars, along with local and international architecture students who are interested in developing their own theses related to borders.

Future School Summer Studio approached architecture not as a centralised and institutionalised field focused on the design of physical structures but rather one that interconnects all aspects of society, from people and technology to philosophy, nature and knowledge itself. FSSS pursued a humanist approach to establishing a paradigm shift toward a decentralised network for learning.
